It is primarily used for the long-term management of asthma, particularly in patients who experience asthma symptoms despite using other medications such as inhaled corticosteroids. Zafirlukast works by blocking the action of certain chemicals in the body called leukotrienes. Leukotrienes are substances that are released by the immune system in response to allergens or other triggers, and they cause inflammation, bronchoconstriction (narrowing of the airways), and mucus production in the lungs.
