Mepolizumab Mepolizumab is a medication used in the treatment of severe eosinophilic asthma and other eosinophil-related disorders. It is a monoclonal antibody that targets and blocks the activity of interleukin-5 (IL-5), a cytokine responsible for promoting the production and activation of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell involved in allergic reactions and inflammation. Eosinophilic asthma is a subtype of severe asthma characterized by elevated levels of eosinophils in the airways. This condition is often resistant to traditional asthma treatments like inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting beta-agonists. Mepolizumab helps reduce eosinophil levels, which can lead to improved asthma control and reduced asthma exacerbations in people with severe eosinophilic asthma. The medication is administered as an injection, typically subcutaneously (under the skin), and is usually given every few weeks.  The common brand name for mepolizumab is " Nucala.
